The unconscious state feels like bliss because it is entirely in the moment, with no memories of the past, or fears of the future. In contrast, consciousness is continually confronted by the possibilities of an unknown future leading ultimately to death. (Macabre representation of the Tree of Knowledge and Death. Woodcut by Jost Amman, from Jacob Rueff's De conceptu et generatione hominis, printed by Peter Fabricius, Frankfurt, 1587).
Man just can't handle this god-substance, this spirit, he contains within himself. If he decides that he is spirit, it possesses him and he fills up with false pride. If he tries to deny the spirit within and limit himself to his animal nature, he feels sad and empty, bereft of all purpose. Man's story seems to be the story of an attempt to answer the seemingly unanswerable: how to merge god and animal into one being?
In Genesis, the serpent is introduced as a creature âmore subtil than any beast of the field.â That implies that the serpent must also possess knowledge of good and evil. He must be something different than either the animals or man. Interestingly, the serpent serves this function in other myths. One that bears closely on the Bible's story is the Egyptian myth of why Ra revealed his name to Isis.
RA AND ISIS
In the Egyptian myth, Ra was the supreme God, the God who created all things. But he had grown old and senile and doddered slowly around, spittle falling from his lips. Isis carefully formed a snake out of the earth and put it on the ground where Ra would pass by. When he did, his spittle fell on the snake and gave it life. Once alive, the snake bit Ra, causing Ra great pain.
Ra was perplexed: nothing existed except that which he had created and he had not created anything which could have done this to him. So he had no idea how to cure himself. Meanwhile, he grew sicker and sicker. He called Isis to his side to see if she could help him, because he had made her a great healer, among her other attributes.
